A medium size evergreen tree. Bark is brownish-black, rough and fissured. Tender parts of the plant are covered with rusty-brown star-shaped hairs. Petals are hooded with forked appendages. Stamens are ten, of which only five are fertile and are fused into a hollow cup-like structure. Fruit is dry, indehiscent, hard and dark when ripe.
The dry fruit is mistaken for 'Rudraksh".

यह एक मध्यम आकार का सदाबहार वृक्ष है। इसकी छाल भूरी-काली, खुरदरी एवं गहरी दरारों वाली होती है। पौधे के कोमल भागों पर जंग-भूरे रंग के तारा-आकार (star-shaped) रोएँ पाए जाते हैं। इसके छोटे पीले पुष्पों की पंखुड़ियाँ (petals) हुड के समान होती हैं तथा उनमें दो-शाखीय उपांग (forked appendages) होते हैं। इसके 10 पुंकेसरों (stamens) में से केवल 5 ही उर्वर (fertile) होते हैं, जो आपस में जुड़कर प्याले जैसी संरचना बनाते हैं।
इसके फल कठोर, शुष्क (dry), न फटने वाले (indehiscent) तथा पकने पर गहरे भूरे से काले रंग के हो जाते हैं। इन फलों का स्वरूप रुद्राक्ष से मिलता-जुलता होने के कारण इन्हें अक्सर रुद्राक्ष समझ लिया जाता है, जबकि यह एक भिन्न प्रजाति है।
ये उष्णकटिबंधीय कैरेबियन द्वीपों, मेक्सिको, मध्य अमेरिका, कोलंबिया, इक्वाडोर, पेरू, बोलिविया, पराग्वे, अर्जेंटीना तथा ब्राज़ील की मूल निवासी प्रजाति है। सुंदर और मध्यम आकार का वृक्ष होने के कारण इसे भारत में लगभग 100 वर्ष से अधिक समय पहले लाया गया था और तब से इसका व्यापक रूप से रोपण किया जा रहा है।PC: © Sonu Kumar
