Tree, 7 m or more tall. Leaves oval or elliptic, obtuse or acutish, 8.2-15.2 cm long, 3.3-7.1 cm broad, petiole 5-9 mm long. Panicles 14-35.5 cm long. Hypanthium 8-10 mm long, 11-13 mm broad, 12-ribbed, tomentose. Epicalyx minute, thick. Sepals 7-8 mm long, 4.5-5 mm broad, in fruit spreading, woody. Petals 3.2-3.5 cm long, 2.1-2.5 cm broad, claw 5-6 mm. Ovary 6 mm in diameter. Capsule 1.7-2 cm in diameter, rugose.

यह 8-10 मीटर या उससे अधिक ऊँचाई वाला एक आकर्षक पर्णपाती वृक्ष है। इसकी पत्तियाँ अंडाकार से दीर्घवृत्ताकार (oval to elliptic) होती हैं, जिनकी लंबाई लगभग 10-15 सेमी तथा चौड़ाई 5-8 सेमी होती है। पुष्पन काल में इसकी शाखाओं के सिरों पर बड़े-बड़े पुष्पगुच्छ विकसित होते हैं, जिनमें गुलाबी से बैंगनी रंग के आकर्षक, झुर्रीदार पुष्प खिलते हैं।
इसके पुष्पों की बनावट विशिष्ट होती है, जिसमें स्पष्ट रिबयुक्त एवं रोयेंदार पुष्पनलिका (hypanthium) तथा बड़े, आकर्षक दल (petals) पाए जाते हैं। फल गोलाकार, कठोर तथा खुरदरी सतह वाले कैप्सूल होते हैं, जो पकने के बाद सुख के फट जाते है।
दक्षिण एवं दक्षिण-पूर्व एशिया की मूल निवासी यह प्रजाति भारत में उद्यानों, सड़कों एवं सार्वजनिक स्थलों पर व्यापक रूप से लगाई जाती है। इसके पुष्प मधुमक्खियों, तितलियों एवं अन्य परागणकर्ताओं को आकर्षित करती है। ये महाराष्ट का राज्य फूल भी हैं।
