A Thorny deciduous shrub or small tree, usually growing 3–8 m tall. It is easily recognized by its bipinnate leaves, paired thorns, and distinctive bicoloured flower spikes with purple upper flowers and yellow lower flowers, resembling a Chinese lantern. It produces flattened, twisted pods containing several seeds. The species is native to Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and Southeast Asia, and is common in dry deciduous forests, scrublands, and grasslands.

Ecological Importance: A nitrogen-fixing species that improves soil fertility, stabilizes degraded soils, provides nectar for bees and butterflies, and offers shelter and food for birds and small mammals. It is also useful in restoring degraded dryland ecosystems. -
