Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa

A medium-sized, slow-growing deciduous tree that usually attains a height of 8–15 m. It is easily recognized by its thorny branches, aromatic trifoliate leaves, and hard-shelled, round fruits. The bark is greyish and rough, while the young branches often bear sharp spines. The leaves consist of three leaflets and emit a pleasant fragrance when crushed. The tree produces greenish-white, sweet-scented flowers in small clusters, mainly during April to June, followed by large, woody fruits that ripen from October to March. The ripe fruit contains aromatic orange pulp, which is sweet, nutritious, and edible.

बेल पत्र भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप की मूल निवासी प्रजाति है और भारत, नेपाल, श्रीलंका, बांग्लादेश, म्यांमार तथा दक्षिण-पूर्व एशिया के अन्य देशों में प्राकृतिक रूप से पाई जाती है। यह शुष्क पर्णपाती वनों में अच्छी तरह विकसित होती है तथा धार्मिक महत्व के कारण मंदिरों और घरों के आसपास भी लगाई जाती है। हिंदू धर्म में इसकी पत्तियाँ भगवान शिव की पूजा में अत्यंत पवित्र मानी जाती हैं। इसके फल से शरबत, मुरब्बा, जैम तथा अन्य खाद्य पदार्थ बनाए जाते हैं। आयुर्वेद में इसके फल, पत्तियाँ, छाल और जड़ों का उपयोग पाचन संबंधी रोगों, मधुमेह तथा सूजन जैसी अनेक बीमारियों के उपचार में किया जाता है। यह वृक्ष पक्षियों और अन्य वन्यजीवों के लिए भी भोजन एवं आश्रय का महत्वपूर्ण स्रोत है।
