Ziziphus xylopyrus is a small, thorny deciduous tree or large shrub, usually growing 3–8 m tall. It is recognized by its zigzag spiny branches, small ovate leaves with three prominent veins, greenish-yellow flowers, and hard, woody, round fruits that remain on the tree for a long time. It is native to the Indian subcontinent and commonly found in dry deciduous forests, scrublands, rocky hills, and thorn forests.

इसके फूल मधुमक्खियों एवं अन्य परागणकर्ताओं के लिए अमृत का स्रोत हैं। इसके फल पक्षियों, बंदरों, हिरण तथा अन्य वन्यजीवों के भोजन का महत्वपूर्ण स्रोत हैं, जिससे बीजों का प्रसार होता है। इसकी घनी काँटेदार शाखाएँ पक्षियों और छोटे वन्यजीवों को सुरक्षित आश्रय प्रदान करती हैं। यह मृदा संरक्षण, कटाव रोकने तथा शुष्क वनों के पुनर्स्थापन में भी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाता है।
