A large perennial shrub or small tree, usually growing 2–5 m tall. It is easily recognized by its thick grey-green velvety leaves, abundant milky latex, and waxy white to lavender-purple flowers. The plant produces inflated green fruits that split open to release numerous silky-haired seeds dispersed by wind. It is native to North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, including India, and commonly grows in dry, open habitats, roadsides, wastelands, and sandy soils.
सावधानी: इसका दूग्ध/लेटेक्स विषैला होता है और त्वचा या आँखों में जलन पैदा कर सकता है।
Status in India: ✅ Native
Flowering & Fruiting: Nearly throughout the year.
Ecological Importance: A hardy pioneer species that stabilizes degraded soils and provides nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. It is an important host plant for the Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus), African Monarch (Danaus dorippus), and several other milkweed butterflies. The silky seeds aid natural dispersal and colonization of disturbed habitats. -
