A large evergreen tree, usually growing 10–20 m tall. It is easily recognized by its dense crown, glossy dark green leaves, and the world's largest tree-borne fruits, which grow directly on the trunk and main branches (cauliflory). The fruits have a thick, spiny rind and contain sweet, edible yellow bulbs surrounding large seeds. Native to the Western Ghats of India, it is widely cultivated throughout tropical Asia for its nutritious fruits and valuable timber.
