Lantana camara is a thorny evergreen shrub (1–4 m tall) with rough, aromatic leaves and clusters of colourful flowers that change from yellow to orange, pink, red, or purple. It is native to Central and South America and was introduced to India as an ornamental plant. Today, it is one of the world's most invasive alien plant species.
Status in India: ❌ Introduced & Highly Invasive
Flowering & Fruiting: Throughout the year.
Ecological Impact: Forms dense thickets that replace native plants, prevent forest regeneration, reduce biodiversity, increase forest fire risk, alter wildlife habitats, and hinder the movement of animals. It also reduces grazing land and affects forest productivity.
यह विश्व की सबसे खतरनाक आक्रामक विदेशी पौध प्रजातियों में से एक है। यह घने झुरमुट बनाकर देशी पौधों को प्रतिस्पर्धा में पीछे छोड़ देती है, नए वृक्षों के प्राकृतिक पुनर्जनन को रोकती है तथा जैव विविधता को कम करती है। यह मिट्टी के सूक्ष्मजीवों और पोषक चक्र को प्रभावित करती है, सूखी झाड़ियों के कारण वनाग्नि की तीव्रता और फैलाव बढ़ाती है, वन्यजीवों और पशुओं की आवाजाही व चराई में बाधा उत्पन्न करती है तथा चरागाहों की उत्पादकता घटाकर आर्थिक नुकसान भी पहुँचाती है। भारत के अनेक संरक्षित वनों में यह प्राकृतिक पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र के लिए एक गंभीर खतरा बन चुकी है। -
