A large evergreen tree, usually growing 20–40 m tall. It is easily recognized by its whorled leaves (usually 4–8 leaves at each node), smooth grey bark, and abundant milky latex. The tree bears small, fragrant greenish-white flowers in dense clusters during October–December, followed by long, slender paired pods containing silky-haired seeds. Native to the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and northern Australia, it is widely planted as an avenue and ornamental tree. The bark has long been used in traditional medicine, while the tree provides shade and supports many insects and birds.
