A medium-sized, fast-growing deciduous tree, usually reaching 10–20 m in height. It is easily recognized by its grey-brown bark, bipinnate to tripinnate compound leaves, and fragrant, lilac to pale purple flowers borne in large panicles during March to May. The fruits are round, yellow berries that persist on the tree even after the leaves have fallen.
यह भारत सहित एशिया का मूल निवासी वृक्ष है और शुष्क पर्णपाती वनों, सड़कों के किनारे, उद्यानों तथा शहरी क्षेत्रों में सामान्य रूप से पाया जाता है। इसे छायादार एवं सजावटी वृक्ष के रूप में व्यापक रूप से लगाया जाता है।
