A gregarious woody shrub. Leaves are simple, elliptic-obovate, obliquely cordate at base, crenate serrate in margin and palmately 3-5 ribbed. Flowers are axillary cymes. Sepals are brown, hairy and 2 lipped. Petals red turning grey with age and reflexed. Fruit is spiraly twisted.
The native range of this species is China (S. Yunnan) to Tropical Asia. It is a shrub or small tree and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical regions.
