  • Diospyros melanoxylon, जिसे स्थानीय रूप से Tendu कहा जाता है, भारत के शुष्क एवं उष्णकटिबंधीय पर्णपाती वनों का एक मध्यम आकार का वृक्ष है। राजस्थान में यह मुख्यतः दक्षिणी एवं दक्षिण-पूर्वी वन क्षेत्रों में पाया जाता है। इसकी पत्तियाँ बीड़ी (Bidi) निर्माण के लिए अत्यंत प्रसिद्ध हैं और लाखों वन-आश्रित परिवारों की आजीविका का महत्वपूर्ण स्रोत हैं। इसके पके हुए फल भालू, बंदर, हिरण, पक्षियों तथा अन्य वन्यजीवों के लिए पौष्टिक खाद्य स्रोत हैं, जबकि मनुष्य भी इन्हें खाता है। इसकी छाल गहरे धूसर से काली, मोटी तथा आकर्षक चौकोर (blocky) दरारों वाली होती है, जो वृक्ष की एक प्रमुख पहचान है।

    The tree is of a moderate size. It is normally found in a dry deciduous forest or evergreen depending on its habitat. It is the most widely distributed throughout India, covering the entire Indian peninsula. One of its distinguishing characteristics is the pelican-colored bark that peels in rectangular scales. Elliptic-oblong leaves can be opposing or alternating, leathery, and up to 32 cm long. When young, they are velvety on both sides, but as they mature, they become greenish and tough. The flowering and fruiting periods are April-May and March-April respectively
