A small to medium-sized deciduous tree, usually growing 4–10 m tall. It is easily recognized by its grey, rough bark, milky latex, and opposite, broad ovate leaves covered with fine hairs when young. The tree bears fragrant white, star-shaped flowers in terminal clusters during March to June, followed by long, slender paired follicles containing numerous flat seeds with silky hairs.
