  • Dendrocalamus strictus is a large, clump-forming bamboo, usually growing 8–18 m tall. It is easily recognized by its thick, nearly solid culms, upright growth, and narrow lance-shaped leaves. Unlike many other bamboos, its culms are often solid or nearly solid, making it exceptionally strong. Native to the Indian subcontinent, it is commonly found in dry deciduous forests and is one of the most widespread bamboo species in India. It is widely used for construction, furniture, paper pulp, handicrafts, agricultural implements, scaffolding, and fencing.
    Status in India: ✅ Native
Flowering: Gregarious flowering occurs at long intervals (30–60 years or more), after which many culms die.
Ecological Importance: Helps prevent soil erosion, restores degraded lands, stores carbon, and provides shelter for birds, insects, and small mammals. Bamboo clumps also improve soil moisture and support forest ecosystems.
