Deciduous trees to 8 m. Leaves 20-25 cm, rachis glabrous; leaflets 7-9, elliptic-orbicular, rounded or emarginate, cuneate at base, glabrous, sub-coriaceous. Calyx glabrous Corolla creamy white. Stamens 9, monadelphous Pod oblong, narrowed at both ends, slightly thickened, glabrous, 1-4-seeded.

यह एक मध्यम से बड़ा पर्णपाती वृक्ष है, जो सामान्यतः 8–20 मीटर तक ऊँचा होता है। यह अपनी गहरे रंग की मजबूत और टिकाऊ लकड़ी (Rosewood) के लिए प्रसिद्ध है।
छोटे क्रीमी-सफेद पुष्प गुच्छों में खिलते हैं, जिनके बाद चिकनी, आयताकार फलियाँ बनती हैं। प्रत्येक फली में सामान्यतः 1–4 बीज होते हैं।
यह भारत की प्रमुख इमारती लकड़ी देने वाली प्रजातियों में से एक है और प्रायद्वीपीय भारत के शुष्क एवं आर्द्र पर्णपाती वनों में प्राकृतिक रूप से पाई जाती है। दलहनी कुल का सदस्य होने के कारण यह नाइट्रोजन स्थिरीकरण द्वारा मिट्टी की उर्वरता बढ़ाने में भी सहायक है। -
